A lot of clients ask me for advice about domains.  What domain should I get if I am a Canadian company?  Should I get the .com or the .ca.  I always respond with the same message, domain names are similar to buying real estate on the Internet.  They are very cheap often under $25 per year.  You would be crazy not to register your companies domain in as many extensions as possible especially the .com and .ca and .net extension.  Recently I came across a potential client that was victim of this issue.  I did a search on the company and found their site,  what I thought was their site,  turned out it was the competition.  The competitors website was www.independentjewellers.net.  I looked at the website and was surprised that the website did not look polished and professional.  Turns out their website was not the #1 position in Google for the search term “independent jewellers” it was the third position and the address was www.independentjewellers.com.

For many, many years, Google has had a strangle hold on the search engine market, accounting for at least 60% of market share worldwide. Many other search engines have come and gone, all with the intention of taking that market share away. Not surprisingly, no one has yet succeeded.

However, there are two upcoming search engines that could change everything.

Announced on March 5, 2009, Wolfram Alpha is calling itself a “computational knowledge engine”. What does that mean?? It means it’s taken the technologies that search engines like Google have made and is taking them to a new level by implementing a whole new kind of search technology.

I have contacted you is anybody there?

In the online world a common conversion is when a visitor fills out your “Request for Information” form.  Once filled out this information is forwarded to certain email addresses within a company or to a central sales email address.   The one thing that drives me crazy is when companies don’t return these requests within a timely manner.  I recently visited an company’s website that distributes marketing information strictly for online marketing companies like ours.  You would think a company like this one would get back to you in a timely manner.  They got back to me 1.5 days later.  Those that think that is acceptable for a large organization, do you think its acceptable to return a phone call in 1.5 days?  If so you have been working in a large organization for too long.  Here’s a tip, want to impress your prospects with your service, answer your RFIs in 5 minutes.  Your prospects will be shocked and impressed at the same time and you will start off your relationship on a great note rather than a off tune note.  Try it, we do this all the time in our sales department and we land more business because of it.

In a recent guest post over at Search Engine Journal, I look at several hurdles to clear when implementing social media in-house.

Because social medai tools like Twitter and Facebook really do need to be maintained by an internal employee, you may think that there’s no point in hiring a company to help with it. But actually, many of those hurdles can be overcome with the help of an online marketing company that knows social media inside and out.
