Our company is hiring a sales person this year and I have read several articles from sales experts talking about a connection between sales drive and sports. Currently we are looking at a candidate that has a long history with sports and coaching. So does that mean he can sell? Well the jury is out on that one. Personally I played sports, and I feel I have sales drive. I think that sports definitely teaches you how to want to win and work as a team or as an individual to win. I do hate to lose, is that because of sports, maybe.

Is there a connection between sales and sports?
Monday, September 28th, 2009Using Twitter Search and Google Alerts
Sunday, September 27th, 2009All companies competing today have certain phrases that should be tracked either to connect with customers or keep track of competitors. For instance if you are a mortgage broker in Toronto then “Toronto mortgages” is likely an important phrase to track. It may take some revisions of your important phrases to find the right ones but once you do you can keep track of what is being said on the Internet and popular micro blogging tools such as Twitter. How you ask? Quite easy, Google Alerts for Internet data, just do a search in Google for “Google Alerts” and set one up for your key phrase, in this example “Toronto Mortgages” you will receive email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic. A popular use of Google Alerts is for online reputation management. Setup an alert for your company’s name often offers some valuable information on what is being said about your company online.
Quick Tip: How to know if your site is listed as suspicious by Google
Thursday, September 24th, 2009First off, a “suspicious website” is a site that has malicious code or software that’s being downloaded and installed without a user’s consent. It can be both intentional and non-intentional and it’s you or your contractors responsibility to check as often as possible for these kinds of threats.
The implication of this is that you will lose visitors from Google if your site is listed as suspicious. That’s a fact. As soon as Google update their search index (their searchable content), they’ll remove your site from their search engine results page (SERP).
Want to know if a company is good at online marketing? Check the organic results.
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009It amazes me how some companies profess to be experts in online marketing yet you check the organic or pay per click results and they are nowhere to be found. If a company is good at SEO then the first thing they will do is ensure their position in the search engine is in at least the top 5 for the desired search result. For instance in our city (Winnipeg) one of the key phrases that a lot of our web design clients search for is “Winnipeg Web Design”. So the first thing we did was work on organic ethical Search Engine Optimization to get the number one position for this term. Also we worked on our pay per click campaign quality score and acheived the top position on the pay per click advertisements.
Logrotate
Monday, September 21st, 2009Is the log for your custom app getting a little long? Have a need to keep your logs around but would like to keep their size down to a more managable size? Logrotate is the easy and powerful answer. You can tell logrotate to rotate your logs on various different triggers (daily, weekly, some other time, on a specific file size, on a specific number of lines, etc). You can tell it what to do before and after rotating (to put mysql into a safe state, or to restart apache to rebuild deleted log files, for example).
Does higher price usually mean better quality?
Saturday, September 19th, 2009Its been an interesting last month dealing with a lot of prospects that are doing a great deal of research before purchasing. Personally I think this is great as the more knowledgeable and the more questions they ask the more informed decision they can make. I spend my time doing a lot of educating on our industry as some of our prospects are start up companies and some marketing people are still learning about online marketing. It still blows me away that some prospects can not understand that their are differences in quality of products. And yes the price is generally the determining factor. I had one client choose to go with another Search Engine Optimization (SEO) package because the other company charged no setup and a monthly fee of $29.99. Our price for our bronze package was $2,000 setup and $250 per month. Well I wonder which package is going to be more effective. If you are good at SEO you are at minimum charging $100 per hour (at minimum). So this company can spend 18 minutes of their time on your site. What this tells me is that they are not effective, their model is likely to get a large number of clients in a 12 month contract and make their money off of volume, doing little work and hence offering customers very little in the way of return on investment. In our business you do get what you pay for.
Make Your Site the Backbone of Your Marketing Campaign
Friday, September 18th, 2009
As I drove home from work the other day, I noticed a new billboard advertising one of my favourite pubs here in the city. There really aren’t that many great places to go here in Winnipeg so I was thrilled to see them putting some dollars into a marketing campaign.
The billboard is eye catching, as it certainly caught my eye. Immediately I noticed that aside from a general “King Street of course!” (I guess people are to assume this is the street the pub is located) they’re advertising their web site. Awesome, I love it.
The Search Engines Remember 9/11
Friday, September 11th, 2009On major days in history, and even many not-so-major, the search engine often commemorate by changing their logos or backgrounds.
Today, on the eighth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Bing and Ask have changed their home pages.

Yahoo! is without any significant remembrance. The top stories include President Obama’s first 9/11 anniversary and some other anniversary stories, but that’s about it. G
Google has also not changed its look for today. However, Google typically reserves logo changes for happier and lighthearted occasions.

Twenty commandments of world class salespeople
Friday, September 4th, 20091. Thou Shall Work Hard – World-class closers work 12-hour days and 70-hour weeks, regularly. They know the only type of lasting motivation is selfmotivation. They simply work hard as they are driven to succeed.
2. Thou Shall Be Determined – World-class sales reps are fearless. They will march out into enemy gunfire with only the slightest suggestion. Equally likely, they will creatively find solutions using their own initiative. If necessary, they will follow a direct order without hesitation.
