Is there a connection between sales and sports?

Our company is hiring a sales person this year and I have read several articles from sales experts talking about a connection between sales drive and sports.  Currently we are looking at a candidate that has a long history with sports and coaching.  So does that mean he can sell?  Well the jury is out on that one.  Personally I played sports, and I feel I have sales drive.  I think that sports definitely teaches you how to want to win and work as a team or as an individual to win.  I do hate to lose, is that because of sports, maybe.

I find this topic interesting as right now my daughter is trying out for 8A1 boys hockey and it has been quite an experience for the parents and my daughter.  Some say she is too you young to be learning how to win/lose make a team or get cut.  Part of me thinks that she has got to learn these lessons at some time maybe starting early is good for her.  Through this process she has learned to try as hard as she can to make a team she wants to play for.  Similar to how you apply for a job you really want.  During the year she will learn to win and learn to accept defeat, similar to winning a sale and losing to a competitor.  I can see a lot of similarities in sports and sales.  Bottom line if a candidate has played sports I will pay more attention to the candidate.

Thinking about kids growing up these days is scary, growing up is not easy I am almost 40 and I remember growing up quite well.  Lots of challenges, there is a song called Mad World that has been covered by a lot of bands and just keeps on getting better – have a listen, if you have kids you may relate more to what your kids may go through growing up.

Once again, thanks for listening
