If you’re like me and do most of your industry specific research online, you probably have a set of blogs and web sites that you trust and rely on more than any others. For a long time, I wished that I could do a Google search within just those trusted sites because I knew that all the results would be reliable.

That ability is now available with Google’s Social Search feature. Right now it’s only available by activating it in Google Labs and of course you must be signed into your Google account for it to work.

YUI Uploader and Crossdomain Permissions

I’ve recently updated to YUI 2.8.0r4 for a project that was using YUI 2.7. Unfortunately after pointing my script tag to use the newer version of YUI the uploader widget stopped working with the existing code.

As it turns out uploader.swf found in the build directory is broken but uploader.swf found in the examples directory works.

For testing purposes I updated my script to use uploader.swf hosted by YAHOO with the following javascript:

YAHOO.widget.Uploader.SWFURL = "http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/examples/uploader/assets/uploader.swf";

This didn’t work either and since I was no longer hosting uploader.swf on the same domain. The reason for this is best explained by the YUI team:

Live every day to the fullest and see the bigger picture

Its interesting the way life’s experiences change your outlook on the way you live every day.  I just had 3 instances in my life in the last 6 months that have changed my outlook, two people I knew very well have passed away suddenly and my father in law got sick and almost did not make it through an operation.  I automatically started to think of every day as the day to live to its fullest.  Its hard though because if you are a planner you continue to live the days and plan for years to come.  Bottom line is you may not be around for years to come so make your impact now, do what is important to you and be giving and honest with others.  Remember in the long run money is’nt everything, to me money just allows you to do fun things but it sure does not buy happiness.  When you die people don’t talk about the money you have (or had) they talk about how you were as a person, how many friends you had and what impact you had on others lives.

Does my website look bad?

It amazes me how some people can fully understand the difference between nice graphic designed print material and bad graphic designed print material.  They can pick the poor one out in a second.  However, they can look at their 10 year old website and say that it still looks fine and do you think we need to change it.  Last client I was into see I felt like an optometrist, what looks better site A or site B, again A or B.  He got it but it took a little convincing.

Running a completely different linux distro with chroot

The Linux chroot environments are often used to run pieces of software that are not compatable with the running distribution. For example, people running 64 bit Linux distributions will often create a 32 bit chroot environment based on that same distribution to run 32 bit software that might have better support. Adobe’s flash is a good example from the past: before 64 bit linux really gained popularity, only the 32 bit version of Adobe flash was available natively. But what if you need to install something that isn’t supported natively by your distribution at all, but is under a different distribution, and you’d like to keep package management the same?

You might know this already, but it’s the first time for me to see a local ad being posted on an NBA Live PlayStation game. Here are some screencaps I took for Dane Cook’s show at MTS Centre, Winnipeg.

Social Segregation Online

Social Segregation OnlineI think I’m becoming a social media snob.

Thanks to the power of Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites, I feel pretty confident that I’m hearing about the latest world news and pop culture.

Take yesterday for example. From the moment I started watching the live stream of #balloonboy. I watched the live stream, I watched people talking on Twitter about it, I looked into the links talking about the “science-obsessed family” who had recently appeared on the TV show Wife Swap. I didn’t watch Larry King, but I was on Twitter to watch thousands of people start tweeting “OMG did you hear balloon boy say it was all for the show”. This morning I watched the discussion and videos of #balloonboy vomiting twice during live interviews.

Twitter is currently investigating on a problem. And while this is being resolved, Twitter advises everyone not to change their username, email address or password or the bug will lock your account out.

From Twitter:

We’re currently researching reports from users who are locked out after trying to reset their passwords or change their email address or user names.  This seems to affect new users as well as long term users; we do not advise changing your user name, email address, or password at this time.  We will update Status with more news as it becomes available.

Are you an email spammer?

Email blasts, done correctly and ethically, can be a very effective way to promote your company. It still amazes me how many people still do not understand email laws and do not adhere to them. I think the attitude from customers towards paying for email blasts can be negative, as a lot of customers think of email as free to send and don’t realize that there are specific rules to follow in order for their email not to be considered spam.  The following outlines these guidelines.
