One of our largest clients – McNally Robinson Booksellers – announced they are going into bankruptcy protection. The company has been struck with some hard times with rising costs from opening a new store at Polo Park Mall (Winnipeg) and another new location in Ontario. According to McNally the Ontario location (just outside of Toronto) experienced serious problems with the developer of the mall. According to Paul McNally, they did a poor job of getting other retailers in the mall and offered poor signage which caused a lot of issues for the book store. The news is a little misleading at this point if you ask me as it seems as though McNally is closing its doors for good. That is not the case, they have gone into Bankruptcy protection and are still operating 2 of their stores, one in Winnipeg (Grant Park) and one in Saskatoon. In addition they have full intention to maintain their e-commerce website as they feel it is an efficient method to sell books and certainly the wave of the future. Many companies go into Bankruptcy protection and then come out with a plan and continue to be very successful. Recently we were interviewed by CBC’s Wab Kinew regarding McNally. The clip is at the 10 minute mark of the segment, Click here to see the news broadcast.

How imporant is Office Culture
Friday, December 11th, 2009Let’s face it, your staff are the most important element of your business. Often they are your first point of contact with your customers. You must treat them like gold and I think it is critical to create an atmosphere that is friendly and somewhat fun to work at. Lets be real work is work but you can work hard and have some laughs with your fellow co-workers and enjoy the day. In addition to your team getting along which is much easier when you have a smaller organization, is the atmosphere you create in the work place. I had to laugh I went into an office the other day and on the fridge it said “Pay for your drinks or we will stop buying them”. Unfortunately that right there tells a lot about a company’s culture. How much does it really cost especially if you have a smaller staff to supply soft drinks in your work place and even if you charge for them which some larger organizations feel they need to, the few people that don’t pay (although unfair to others that do) really does not cost you a lot.
Tiger Woods – You’re Not the First One to be in This Situation
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009Wow what a fall from perfection that Tiger Woods is living right now. Literally one of the most famous athletes in the world that up until now has done everything right with regards to his golf career, his sponsors, his personal life and his overall image. Now whenever you see Tiger on a billboard you do think differently of him. I have to admit I do and I love golf and I love watching Tiger Woods play golf and I feel privileged to live in an era that can experience and watch his career. I was born in the early 70’s so I have had the pleasure of watching such greats as Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Michael Jordan, Pete Sampras and now Tiger Woods and (I can’t forget to mention Sidney Crosby). The issue with Tiger is he has had a huge image blow, but is he the only one and will he bounce back. I think he will but it will take some time and he may lose his wife and kids which would kill me if I were him. But is Tiger the only one that has gone through this type of situation, absolutely not. VISA: The Only Card Accepted at the 2010 Olympic Games
Friday, December 4th, 2009Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is hosting the 2010 Olympic Games in February.
One of their biggest sponsors (called Global Sponsors) is VISA. As a result of their sponsorhip, VISA is the only payment card accepted at the 2010 Olympic Games.
You heard me. That means no MasterCard, no American Express and NO DEBIT CARDS (Interac).
I suppose I could almost understand not accepting any other credit card, but debit cards too?
Wait, I take that back, I don’t understand this at all.
Operational Business Plan makes the most sense
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009We just finished our operational business plan for our next fiscal year. Our philosophy is lets create a business plan that actually has strategies and tasks that we want to check off and complete and if we do these tasks we will be moving closer to achieving our main strategies. Certainly “Money Raising” business plans have a use when you are trying to raise money but if you are using a business plan for internal improvements I suggest using an operating business plan. The key is to stick to the tasks that you have laid out in the business plan and try not to get distracted by ideas that come up during the year. Ideally each employee in your company should receive a task document that should be completed by the end of the fiscal year. If everyone does their best to complete these tasks and this is monitored throughout the year the company should be getting closer to acheiving their main strategies.
