Today, I was wondering how I could ever search for something if Google didn’t exist and I asked myself, “How do I look for answers without using Google?”
I certainly wanted to answer my own question really bad so I dug up a few worthy search engines out there that can be my alternative to Google search.
Here are some of my early favorites (in no order):
1) Yahoo!
No introduction is needed for the 3rd largest website in the world.
2) Bing
Now with over 200 million websites, image/video and local search in their index, they are easily poised to be Google’s next best search engine competitor.
3) Ask
Ask or ‘Ask Jeeves’ is also a admirable search engine that was founded 2 years before Google. Still providing relevant results to their users.
4) Hakia
A semantic search engine that was founded in 2004 to provide a unique experience to all kind of search queries. Might be something to watch out for in the future.
5) AltaVista
Founded 3 years before Google and 1 year before Ask, AltaVista was my first search engine (not that I’m that old). AltaVista is still a favorable search engine alternative for many users and it is the only search engine to be awarded 61 search-related patents, more than any other Internet search company!
6) Cuil
Cuil claims to be the world’s biggest search engine and might be a sound alternative if it beats Bing in terms of search relevancy.
Cuil is an old Irish word for knowledge.
7) Blekko
Blekko recently raised $2.5 Million in addition to the previous $11.5 Million. This search engine still has to prove its worth and like many others, we wait till it launches.
I also hope Blekko doesn’t become another Cuil who was overhyped by bloggers to become one big disappointment during its launch.
I hope my list of search engine alternatives didn’t disappoint. If you have a worthy Google alternative, please feel free to chime below.
Thanks and have a great weekend.

The first three SE you mentioned belong to the top 5 SE of 2010- which is mostly the target of bloggers to drive organic traffic to there websites. However, the rest are actually of different category, yet still a SE. Thanks for reminding us and happy weekend too!
