Quick reminder: Avoid being a victim of an e-mail phishing scam.
A good practice to save you from these e-mail hoaxes and fraudulent links (phising) is to always check (double-check then re-check) the link that you are about to click. It may save you from viruses, malwares, spywares or even save you lots of money. Especially if the link involved grabbing your personal information.
Take this phising email I recently received:
The email looked unsuspecting for a regular user at first. But after I hovered into that link “Click here to verify your account”.
…(without clicking it), the link was definitely not from PayPal. A link check saved me from giving out my PayPal username and password.
Here are additional reminders:
- Never respond to requests for personal information via e-mail
- If you need to visit a website, type it in your browser’s address bar
- If this is a popular website like PayPal, they will definitely use encryption (SSL or that https:// prefix on the URL)
- Report these email abuses to the proper authorities
- Don’t believe every warning you read or lottery you’ve just won. Especially if its a ridiculous amount of money. Always remember, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
