Not too long ago, I was finally provided access to ‘New Twitter’, a big step forward in functionality, layout, and organization. I suppose with such a large majority of Twitter users accessing Twitter via 3rd party programs, some inspiration for a new Twitter may stem from the desire to pull users back to the companies native web application interface. Either way, today we’re going to look at the impact that ‘New Twitter’ has on your Twitter wallpaper.

Be careful when hiring internal online marketing staff

There are some companies that decide to hire someone to manage their online marketing internally.  Having internal resources is an excellent idea as managing website changes and implementing a social media strategy takes time and effort.  Where I find certain companies going wrong is trying to hire a candidate that is more technical rather than a marketing specialist.

The goal of an internal online marketing employee is to market a companies brand and ideally drive online sales or leads.  This employee should be an online marketing implementer instead of a technical person.  I see ads for internal online marketing employees that mention:

IE6: The End is Nigh – Part 3

I thought I’d give an update on how the world is doing with ditching Internet Explorer 6. Between August 2009 and  August 2010, IE6 usage has dropped from nearly 18% down to 8%. This is great news! IE6 usage has finally dropped lower than the “other” category of browsers. For more numbers, see here: http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-ww-monthly-200908-201008

There’s a few reasons why we’ll see a very rapid decline in IE6 usage this year.

1) IE6 is old. The last time IE6 came included with an operating system was with Windows XP  SP2, which was superceded by SP3 which included IE7 and automatic updates turned on by default on April 21, 2008. So if you’ve bought a computer after that, you likely got IE7 installed by default.

The Importance of Differentiation

One of the questions we ask in our initial meeting with a prospective customer is how does your company differentiate yourself from the competition.  If a company has trouble answering this question this is a flag that they either have not thought about what they do good or they really do not offer anything better than the competition.  When I am choosing a company to deal with I look for what is different about this company.

GNU/Linux Distros Are Amazing

On October 20th, which also happens to be my birthday, Canonical made the first release of the Ubuntu distribution– Ubuntu 4.10 – Warty Warthog. A friend who I took some courses with at the University of Winnipeg helped me install it on my computer, and I’ve been using it since, occasionally trying out Debian, but not finding it to offer anything more than Ubuntu to me. For the past 6 years, I’ve been using the GNU/Linux operating system, and it’s been an amazing ride. Being able to use any and all of the programming languages and servers I came across, right on my PC, has had a tremendous impact on my professional development as a software developer.

Blackberry vs iPhone

I am a Blackberry user and have been since they came out.  The Blackberry is the only smart phone I have ever used.  My wife has an iPhone and just raves about it, a lot of my friends have iPhones as well and no one has any complaints with this smart phone.  I know they have had issues with the latest version but the version before seems to be very solid.

If you are a regular Internet user, chances are that you will have noticed Google has been pretty busy over the past year. Well the truth is that Google is always busy developing and innovating, that’s why they are so successful. This past year however, Google has launched a number of new services that seem specifically targeted at delivering more relevant information to their users faster than ever. Free and fast is a popular combination on the internet, especially when it also backed by the kind of quality that Google consistently delivers.

Well, its that time of year again, our fiscal year is about to start and I am completing my operational business plan and my budget.  Some interesting items I noticed this year.  As your business grows and matures the business plan gets easier as you know your model and you know what works and what does not.  Similar with the budget, I feel there are less unknowns in this budget that any previous year.

PHP Programming Support Tools

Here I am at Canada’s Web Shop, and I would like to talk about the PHP development support tools that I like to use and why.

I have used some of these tools in the past, and am familiar with their usage and benefits, and some of them are in their infancy themselves, and this is the first time I am trying them out. I am not sure whether I will make much use of them or whether they will be useful for my work, but since their running is automated (It’s “free!”), and the results nicely tie in with the other tools, why not?

Keeping a Consistent Social Profile

Whether you’re representing your company or yourself, it’s important to be easily recognized by a photo or image.

Think about big brand campaigns… whatever they do, their colours, fonts and graphics are the same throughout. How many times have you glanced at a billboard, web banner ad or commercial and immediately know the company because the name even appears?

Across the web when we’re Tweeting, liking things on Facebook and commenting on blogs, there are many opportunities to attach an avatar or profile picture. There are two important things to remember on this:
