I met with a prospect this week that was interested in forming a strategic alliance with us and he mentioned something interested in our meeting. He said that I feel a real positive attitude from your company and we need that in a strategic alliance. They had recently met with another company that is in the same space we are in and he said it was like going into a funeral every time he entered their office.

Do you bring a positive attitude to work?
Monday, November 22nd, 2010Curiosity vs Risk
Monday, November 15th, 2010Curiosity killed the cat, right? I bet if the cat had anything to say about it, his mindset was still worth it.
I was recently thinking about what drove me to become a programmer when I was asked if it’s hard to write code. I realized that the range of understanding necessary to stop any career from being akin to magic is narrow. With some basic understanding of something, you can start learning the rest of it. I came to the conclusion that programming was one of many occupations that could be a natural good choice for my curious personality.
The Importance of the Design Brief
Wednesday, November 10th, 2010I recently had a conversation with a fellow designer at a different shop, and we were discussing ‘The Design Brief’. Whenever we start a new project here at Canada’s Web Shop we always release a design brief document to be filled out by our clients that helps us get ‘into their head’, and their industry. My friend thought this was a novel idea; I thought it was a necessary idea. This is probably the beginning of the process for many professional web design shops, but I just wanted to outline the key areas that I find helpful to ask about in our design brief when starting a new project.
Importance of Search Engine Optimization
Monday, November 8th, 2010I find when meeting with customers and prospects, they understand the need for search engine optimization when they build a website. It used to be that most customers would think that building a website is all you have to do and the online market will be yours. I saw a quote the other day that made perfect sense “Buying a website without search engine optimization is like spending your entire budget on a commercial without buying any air time to show it to the world”.
The DPI Myth
Friday, November 5th, 2010Web designers are often asked “what DPI do you need?” when clients provide digital imagery for their websites. The best answer is coy and not well-accepted: “it does not matter.”
The Myth: DPI tells us the quality of an image.
DPI refers to “dots per inch”. It is a measure of print. Technically, DPI is a property of the image file that indicates nothing about the quality or resolution of the image. DPI exists to direct a printer how close to place the dots on the page. You can create a very high DPI file with very low image quality, and vice versa.
Making the most of a conference
Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010I recently attended a conference in Winnipeg called Centrallia. The conference attracted companies from all over the world to connect and do business on a global basis. Before the conference each company was able to choose 14 other companies they wanted to have a 30 minute meeting with. Other companies chose your company to meet with as well. During the conference our company got to meet with 14 companies for 30 minute meetings.
The conference went really well for our company and I started to think of the keys to make the most of these types of conferences:
