When I was very young, the excitement of Christmas started to build some five or six weeks prior to the big day. In early November the shop windows of local retailers would be transformed from the hum drum into glittering grottos. Soon after, street bunting would appear and Christmas lights would be raised along the length and breadth of Main Street. Things just didn’t look different, they sounded different too. Christmas carollers singing the likes of ‘God Rest You Weary Gentlemen’ and ‘Silent Night’, put the final perfecting touches to the transformation.

I am older now but still enjoy the spirit of Christmas and look forward to it as a time of giving and spending quality time with close friends and family. However, I now work in a business where I have to balance the spirit of Christmas along with the business of Christmas.

Market Research

During those early, joyously naïve days, I failed to recognise friendly questions about what I would like from Santa as market research, but that is exactly what they were. Perhaps that sounds cold but ask yourself this, how many times have you asked someone you care about what they would like for Christmas? Weren’t you trying to get a feel for what to give that person?

As well as asking direct questions we often have an intimate understanding of that person’s likes and dislikes, their habits and interests along with their goals and motivations – all of which provide valuable pointers to the perfect gift.

Timing

There is an interesting aspect to all of this and that is timing. We all know that Christmas falls on the 25th of December and that all our preparations and purchasing of gifts has to be complete for that date. However, as an online retailer your visibility as an ideal supplier needs to be established long before this date i.e. while potential customers are in “hunter and gatherer” mode.

Now Is The Time To Get Started

Top search engine rankings can’t be achieved overnight, so starting to think about Christmas sales now is definitely not premature. Furthermore, assuming that the rankings you maintain at present will withstand competitors marketing incentives through the run-up to the festive period might turn out to be wishful thinking.
