SOPA: Make the right choice, choose the Internet

Chances are that after today, even if you hadn’t heard of SOPA or PIPA before, you have now. The large-scale protest by some of the biggest websites on the net has made these American government bills impossible to ignore for people around the world, due to their global implications should they be voted into law by US congressmen and senators. As a Communication Major and employee of an online marketing company, it would be pretty easy to guess where I stand on the whole issue.

The Key Problem: Context
As someone who always tries to see both sides of a debate, I understand where people are coming from that support these bills. The internet is a medium through which it is more easy than ever before to facilitate theft of intellectual property such as music and movies, and it makes sense that a good way to prevent this kind of theft is to eliminate the people, (or in this case, websites,) that make the theft possible.

An exciting announcement today for us, as we are launching FXR Racing’s expansion into the International E-Commerce world. New sites such as FXRRacing.no will be focused in Scandinavian countries at first, with the site in question being FXR’s Norway site. Other sites being launched FXR Racing Sweden and FXR Racing Finland.

What makes these new e-commerce solutions especially exciting is their localization features. Translations of the FXR site into local languages, combined with product prices displayed in local currencies mean that FXR’s global e-commerce expansion will be highly accessible for the consumers it will reach out to.

Facebook’s Sub-Par Advertising Management Experience

As The Web Shop’s resident PPC ninja, I get to spend the majority of my Internet-Ad-Management time using Google AdWords’ management interface to create and oversee the advertising I am responsible for on the internet. As such, I feel kind of spoiled: their interface is simple and powerful, and almost negates the need for using a 3rd party campaign-management tool.

..And then there’s Facebook’s Advertising Management interface.

Don’t get me wrong in my intentions of writing this post. I don’t mean to say that advertising on Facebook is a bad thing, quite the contrary actually. Facebook presents a valuable and important opportunity for all

A bit of shameless self promotion here; a recent interview I did with Wordstream Internet Marketing has been published to their blog. After receiving above average scores in their PPC Grader tool, I was asked to spill the beans a bit on my PPC success, so make sure to take a look! You can see the interview here.

Social Media Policy: Why Your Company Needs One

It happens so often; I’m discussing social media with a team member of an organization that is large, prominent, or both, and it comes out in conversation that the company in question is on social media, but does not have a social media policy. The first thing that I always reply to these people is “You need a policy, now!”

Social media presents a fantastic opportunity for organizations to become closer with their customers/leads and potential customers/leads. Conversations can be facilitated, feedback can be harnessed, and your company’s marketing efforts can be strengthened. However, in order to ensure that your social media presence is a benefit and not a liability, a social media policy is necessary.

Knowing Where to Start with your Google AdWords Campaign

John recently wrote an interesting article entitled “Is your (AdWords) campaign a donation to Google?” that touched on the issue of making a relatively small investment into an AdWords campaign, and not giving it the proper attention (and spend) it requires to drive leads or sales for your business. Those of you who read John’s article and decided to ramp up your AdWords efforts have probably met with an issue that always presents itself when a PPC campaign is being “fixed”: where do I start?

The Game Changer: My Tribute to Steve Jobs

It was a game changer.

Headed off to university in a few months, my dad was giving me the greatest graduation gift I could ever ask for: a laptop for school. It was 2004, and up until that point in my life, (save for a few experiences with Mac Classics at school,) I had been a PC guy. Looking at laptops in the London Drugs electronics section, I just wasn’t sure about the array of Sonys, Compaqs and HPs that presented themselves. Too clunky, too poorly constructed, too prone to failure a few months after purchase. The Powerbooks were a different story. Sleek and shiny silver, they were well constructed, well designed, and appealed to me in a way that the other black notebooks. I went with a 12″ G4, and never looked back.

The Importance in Who You’re Not Looking For

A common question I get asked by people who are unsure of whether or not they should go into social media, (or even online marketing,) is “why should I be present on social media or online marketing when, on average, only a small portion of people are even present there?” It’s a tough question to answer from a marketing perspective, but I feel like there is a side to social media, (and online marketing,) that most people don’t consider: avoiding people that you’re not looking for.

You may or may not have watched Mark Zuckerberg’s much improved attempt at public speaking yesterday, you may subscribe to a Twitter account or RSS Feed that was posting updates on his important talk. But whether or not you were keeping up to the minute with updates coming out of the Facebook “F8″ conference, unless you are one of the now rare few who are holding out against Facebook, the updates will inevitably affect you.

The Google Monopoly Paradox

There was a great article recently on Fast Company’s blog entitled “Google’s success may mark the end of everything else”. You can read it here – http://ow.ly/5PtAM . I enjoyed reading the article, as the domination of the tech space by certain companies has always been a topic of interest to me dating back to the Microsoft anti-trust lawsuits. Whereas JD Rucker raises some very valid points, there are also some that I disagree with due to the much bigger picture.
