At our last Social Media Manitoba Tweetup we were lucky to have Susie Parker present to the group on the pros and cons of Google Plus. This lead to some great discussion and some surprisingly varied views on the service. Some of the group expressed feelings of being underwhelmed loving its potential but mourning its lack of  innovation; they’ll never beat Facebook. Some feel the service isn’t intuitive and others just see it as another search engine tool primarily of interest to techs, geeks and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) folk.  Overall I was surprised at the lack of love for Google Plus, I know I fall squarely in to that tech/geek/SEO category, but I think Google Plus offers something positive to every kind of user and as events this we prove, we have only seen the tip of the iceberg. Why do I think this? Am I just a hopeless Google Fanboi?  Here’s my two cents on Google Plus:

Google’s Canada Only Search Tool

Have you ever found yourself searching Google.ca looking for information, a product, or a service but find yourself presented with information that is less relevant you because they are from websites outside of Canada? Google.ca is Google’s Canada specific search engine and it does its best to figure out where you are to make your searches geographically relevant, but at the same time it understands that sometimes the information you require will come from websites based outside of Canada too e.g. Wikipedia.

Google Plus BarThe web is once more awash with Google generated excitement and hype. From the first day that little black bar appeared at the top of our beloved Google search page we could all tell something big was coming. The sudden launch and invitation only access to the new features of Google Plus has prompted comparisons to the launch of Gmail and Google Wave, keyboard tapping fingers around the globe are crossed in the hope that this Google innovation will stand the test of time like the former rather than the latter. While many are still waiting for their invitations to Google Plus, for those that have had a chance to play around with its features the chatter is cautiously upbeat. I was one of the lucky ones to receive an invite on launch day and I have to say I’m optimistic.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of presenting to the attendees of the Advertising Association of Winnipeg Breakfast on the topic of Mobile Advertising a sub-topic of the fascinating field of Mobile Marketing. In this presentation (see below) I spoke about the increasing importance of Mobile Advertising with the explosive growth of mobile devices. According to Wikipedia, “In the twenty years from 1990 to 2010, worldwide mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over 4.6 billion.” Amazing growth and this doesn’t even consider the growth of other mobile devices like tablets such as the iPad and Blackberry playbook.

Social Media For Business – Lessons From Santa

Santa, they say, has been around for at least 16 centuries; handing out gifts and good will to all. I think it’s a safe bet to assume Santa knows a thing or two about society and how to communicate a message. As a wise and worldly fellow, it would seem Santa is no stranger to social media either. Santa Claus has a Twitter account @santaclaus, a Facebook Fan Page and you can even track his progress courtesy of Norad. So what can Santa teach us about social media?

As part of my work here at Web Shop I help create and manage a number of Facebook Pages for businesses looking to connect with their clients and fans. Facebook pages offer countless ways to customize your presence on Facebook through countless third party applications such as the FBML (Facebook Markup Language) application and also native applications such as the photos and videos applications. Functionality such as sharing, viewing and tagging photos on Facebook has become so easy, that I for one take it for granted, until today.

Twitter is both a great information gathering resource and effective communication tool, but it is easy to become overwhelmed with what the service puts in front of you. Many Twitter users enthusiastically follow other users early on, only to find that their timeline is now moving too fast and they can’t find the tweets and users that are really important to them. The solution for many is to unfollow Twitter users, and many go one step further and give up on the medium altogether. Twitter lists to the rescue, in October 2009 Twitter introduced the lists feature.

If you are a regular Internet user, chances are that you will have noticed Google has been pretty busy over the past year. Well the truth is that Google is always busy developing and innovating, that’s why they are so successful. This past year however, Google has launched a number of new services that seem specifically targeted at delivering more relevant information to their users faster than ever. Free and fast is a popular combination on the internet, especially when it also backed by the kind of quality that Google consistently delivers.
