The New Democracy of Online Business: Social Votes and SEO

What is a democracy? It’s a system by which people (regular, normal, everyday people) determine who or what is best for fulfilling their wants and needs. It essentially boils down to a popularity contest. This is basically how online search engines (namely Google) work as well.

For a long time now, it has been common knowledge that the biggest factor in determining a website’s position in Google’s search pages is backlinks. A back link is a hypertext link that is found anywhere on the web that points directly to your website. The more links you have, the more popular and relevant your website is considered to be. And therefore the higher (in theory) it should rank in search engines.

If you’re into Search Engine Optimization, you are probably already aware of all the uproar surrounding Google’s algorithm initiatives in 2011. This year has been a nightmare for certain website that were, let’s say, not the greatest in terms of unique, quality content. (For those unsure, content is essentially the stuff that visitors of your website can consume online – articles, videos, images, etc.) The latest algorithm updates, dubbed “Panda,” heavily penalized websites that had thin content, engaged in web spam and generally did not provide visitors with a good user experience.

What About Customer Service?

With so much of this blog turned over to the benefits of SEO and Marketing I thought it pertinent to mention good old customer service. There is no better way to retain customers long term than provide great customer service. When something goes wrong, and it will, it’s down to customer services to straighten things out.

Through search, your customers can research, locate and buy your products online. Social Media allows them to comment on them or the level of service they received from you as a retailer or service provider. Customer Service strives to provide improved customer experience and after-sales support. Dissatisfied customers won’t hang around, and the merely satisfied are already looking for workarounds, alternatives and substitutes. Unless you can engender commitment and loyalty in your existing customers they could easily be lured away with a competitors offer.

When you think about the services Search Engine Optimization companies offer, it is common to think only about search engine rankings. When you visit SEO sites, many talk exclusively about ranking in order to sell link packages. Don’t get me wrong, links are the unquestionable driver of search engine rankings. However, before you consider link building, forget about search engines for the moment and focus on your visitors needs instead.

If you think about your experiences on the internet, you might find that some of the more deeply engaging ones haven’t always depended exclusively on the content you’re consuming.

It’s an elusive concept, that in the world of web development we refer to as metadata. Loosely described, metadata is information and insight into data and how it moves around. Metadata might be the time you visited, how many pages you went to during your visit, what country you’re from or which links brought you to each page. It doesn’t focus on the “what” and “why” so much as the “who”, “where”, “when” and “how”. As web developers, we typically focus on using metadata to return marketing information about visitors or to improve how well web sites are described for search engines.

Have you ever found yourself searching Google.ca looking for information, a product, or a service but find yourself presented with information that is less relevant you because they are from websites outside of Canada? Google.ca is Google’s Canada specific search engine and it does its best to figure out where you are to make your searches geographically relevant, but at the same time it understands that sometimes the information you require will come from websites based outside of Canada too e.g. Wikipedia.

A great practice to incorporate in to your Google Analytics review is a monthly check of your top landing pages. A landing page is the first page a visitor to your website sees when they are referred to your site from different sources. For instance, someone who lands on your website from a search engine might land on a different page according to what keyword they used to find you. {Did you know that Search engines index pages of a website not an entire website?} The traffic sources section will tell you where visitors are coming from to each landing page.
