The Game Changer: My Tribute to Steve Jobs

It was a game changer.

Headed off to university in a few months, my dad was giving me the greatest graduation gift I could ever ask for: a laptop for school. It was 2004, and up until that point in my life, (save for a few experiences with Mac Classics at school,) I had been a PC guy. Looking at laptops in the London Drugs electronics section, I just wasn’t sure about the array of Sonys, Compaqs and HPs that presented themselves. Too clunky, too poorly constructed, too prone to failure a few months after purchase. The Powerbooks were a different story. Sleek and shiny silver, they were well constructed, well designed, and appealed to me in a way that the other black notebooks. I went with a 12″ G4, and never looked back.

The Google Monopoly Paradox

There was a great article recently on Fast Company’s blog entitled “Google’s success may mark the end of everything else”. You can read it here – http://ow.ly/5PtAM . I enjoyed reading the article, as the domination of the tech space by certain companies has always been a topic of interest to me dating back to the Microsoft anti-trust lawsuits. Whereas JD Rucker raises some very valid points, there are also some that I disagree with due to the much bigger picture.

Why the Winnipeg NHL Team Should be Called the Winnipeg Jets

I have been talking to a lot of people regarding the big question in Winnipeg – what will they name the Winnipeg NHL team?  Here are a few reasons why the team should be called the Winnipeg Jets:

Curiosity vs Risk

Curiosity killed the cat, right? I bet if the cat had anything to say about it, his mindset was still worth it.

I was recently thinking about what drove me to become a programmer when I was asked if it’s hard to write code. I realized that the range of understanding necessary to stop any career from being akin to magic is narrow. With some basic understanding of something, you can start learning the rest of it. I came to the conclusion that programming was one of many occupations that could be a natural good choice for my curious personality.

The Importance of the Design Brief

I recently had a conversation with a fellow designer at a different shop, and we were discussing ‘The Design Brief’. Whenever we start a new project here at Canada’s Web Shop we always release a design brief document to be filled out by our clients that helps us get ‘into their head’, and their industry. My friend thought this was a novel idea; I thought it was a necessary idea. This is probably the beginning of the process for many professional web design shops, but I just wanted to outline the key areas that I find helpful to ask about in our design brief when starting a new project.

Wave Google Wave Goodbye

I am a wave...

I wrote about Google Wave before and even asked people if they wanted invites. But yesterday, Google decided to stop its development. I’m not sure if I’d be sad or happy about it, I have mixed emotions.

Here’s the official statement from Google

We were equally jazzed about Google Wave internally, even though we weren’t quite sure how users would respond to this radically different kind of communication. The use cases we’ve seen show the power of this technology: sharing images and other media in real time; improving spell-checking by understanding not just an individual word, but also the context of each word; and enabling third-party developers to build new tools like consumer gadgets for travel, or robots to check code.

How Canada’s Web Shop is green!

It’s Earth Day today, and that got me thinking about what we’re doing for the environment. Some of the things we do are for personal practicality, but it turns out some of those practices help the earth too!

Canada’s Web Shop uses network based services to share information and products between employees as a matter of speed and efficiency in our daily workflows, but the result of that is a nearly paperless office. It’s odd to find the printer out of paper, because we just don’t use much!
